What Exactly is a Video Slot Game?

When you’ve been around awhile, you may well be able to conjure up an image of the classic fruit machine or one arm bandit, as they are also known to. These old school games remain available if you fancy a bit of nostalgia, but it is their basic mechanisms that paved the way for modern video slots. It is a fascinating evolution. So, while a fruit machine had only three reels and a limited number of symbols (cherries, bells, sevens and so on), a video slot has embraced this concept and ran with it. You might notice five or more reels, plenty of new symbols and even additional paylines.

A significant influence on modern video slots is, of course, computer games. Therefore, the graphics are top-notch, often animated in engaging ways and full of color and movement. New innovations are constantly being introduced. Combine this with excellent sound design and background tunes and you have the recipe for a fantastic video slot. They can be themed on a range of topics, from mythology, ancient world legends and historical epics to athletics, holidays and TV programs (and everything in between).

Being a completely digital media, video slots are not limited by the same constraints as the retro fruities or bandits. Some may offer thousands of ways to win, whereas traditionally there only used to be one. Recently, some of the newer ones offer players more than half a million methods to win. Opportunities abound for eager players. This is on top of bonus rounds that can be unlocked within regular playing and a decent dose of multipliers.

How Do These Casino Games Work?

The principles laid down by fruit machines still exist. You set the level of the bet you wish to make, choose the number of paylines that you wish to be in play and hit Spin to start the reels turning over. Where they land and what symbols appear and where governs how much you will win each time. And you have exactly the same chance of winning each time, as the whole game is dictated by a random number generator (RNG), so that it is always a game of pure chance.

There are a number of things to consider when choosing your next online video slot, but the basic controls are largely the same across all the thousands of different titles out there in the wild. Here is a list of the most common features that you will see repeated time and again:

• Auto Play: Here, you can set the number of spins that you wish to run one after the other, then set them on their way while you watch or go make yourself a drink.
• Number Of Paylines: Choose from one to many thousands of ways you wish to win across the reels, with combinations going straight, diagonally and crisscross.
• Max Bet: Rather than having to select the maximum amount of coins to bet each time, this button will just slam it right to the top so you don’t even have to think about it.
• Help/Info/View Paylines: Often hidden behind an ‘i’ or ‘?’ symbol, you will find all of the information about the game rules, the paylines and any other info that you might need.
• Spin: Probably the most obvious one, but once you’ve made all of your settings, this is the one button to rule them all – it’s the one that starts the reels spinning around.

What Bonus Rounds Are Available?

Bonus rounds are the special features that only pop up on certain combinations. They are special and highly coveted by online casino players because this is where the biggest prizes often lurk. They can be as simple as, say, 10 free spins – you get 10 more chances to spin the reels without risking any of your own money – to a full on side game with huge prizes on offer. Other types include expanding wilds, double or nothing and wheels of fortune, for example.

By far the most common trigger for a bonus round is to land three or more scatter symbols across the reels. Alternatives to this paradigm include the separation of scatter symbols and bonus symbols, where the former give you free spins and the latter launches the bonuses. You may even see that a game offers the chance to level up and gradually unlock more and more bonus features as the session progresses, making it even more like a computer game.

For more information on exactly what the bonus round of each game involves and how you can activate it, simply click on the ‘i’ or ‘?’ symbols within the game menu to read more about it.
